In my time at Kansas State University, I had the privilege to get to do undergraduate research in “The Importance of Spanish Music in Music Education”. This research not only opened my eyes to the need for Spanish Music in our Education but the research also opened a door into researching about multi-cultural education and the need for it in my class. During this research, I discovered that in my classroom every student has a story. A story that is unique to them and their experiences, race, and culture. As a teacher I want to allow my students to share this story if they feel comfortable. Another aspect is that each child has an identity they have established at home with their family and friends, the classroom is not an end to this identity but is an area to really cultivate their identity. As a teacher I want to allow my students to come in the classroom and know they are free to be themselves to express their ideas and thoughts freely without judgment during activities in our lesson. I want students to know this classroom is a place for them to cultivate the idea of community and to be able to learn how to bring their abilities and stories to the community. Stressing the importance of every member being apart of the community because otherwise we are missing out on vital stories and talents.
Some different ways I want to cultivate these beliefs in my class is I want to allow for my students to explore music from their different cultures. I do not want to be the only one choosing the music for the classroom. If I have a student from Latin America who would like to study Latin American music than I will research music from this culture and I will find music that will be appropriate for my students. I also want to allow students the opportunity to write music and let it be an expression of who they are and what they identify as. I want to allow the students to learn from each other and learn about cultures from these students. If students feel comfortable, allowing them to present about their home cultures and allowing them to inform us about a piece of themselves they may not get to share very often. I want students to walk into my classroom and know it is a safe zone where they can be who they are freely.
