In my time at Kansas State University I was able to study about music and education. In my studies of music I was able to study the basics of theory fundamentals and understanding theory of different time periods of music. I was also able to develop aural skills at my time at K-State and understand the importance of being able to hear changes in the music and pick out different parts as well as the tool it gives in sight reading. I also had the chance to study music history from ancient times all the way to present contemporary music and watching the changes in music and how music has changed over centuries of time. I have taken classes on instrumentation and arranging and understanding the importance of knowing instruments and the unique qualities that each instrument brings to music. As well as the understanding of what instruments go well with other instruments. I have had the chance to take vocal lessons and piano lessons and these lessons created an opportunity for me to really explore these instruments and how to teach these instruments to their full benefit. I also spent time at K-State in choir ensembles. I spent time in different ensembles that each were able to show me the benefits of different choirs and how they impact students according to where they are developmentally. I have participated in classes on conducting and also spent time getting to conduct a choir with my peers and understanding the time and planning that often needs to be spent in teaching a choir. I have taken courses that have specifically taught on education and how to teach students according to where they are developmental and the content that is necessary to meet the student where they are. I have taken different music education courses that specifically talk about the processes music educators must take in order for our students to be able to fully grasp the knowledge necessary and relevant to their outside life. In these classes we explored the concept of providing opportunities for our students to be exposed to different genres of music such as jazz. We also looked at how we can integrate allowing the students to create different music to share with the students. Such as the students composing different music according to what they have been learning and using technology in the classroom.
Some different ways I plan to integrate this in the classroom is first making sure that what I am teaching the students is linked to their developmental stage. If they are in elementary making sure the students are able to participate in the activities and are not inhibited by their developmental needs. In secondary music classrooms, making sure I pick pieces that are meeting their educational needs but will also hold their interest. I plan on introducing history and culture into the classroom. I want my classroom to be a place where we can talk about history past and present. Where we explore different cultures through music and can talk about where our culture is right now. It is important for students to be exposed to this before they are thrown into the real world. I also want the students to be exposed to basic music theory so that students are able to still understand and study music even once they are out of my class. I want the students to learn also how to really express themselves in the music, I think that is one of the more beneficial parts of a music education is students can really dive into what they want to show in their music and really bring forth a part of their identity they maybe do not get to share often.
