At my time at Kansas State University in my education classes we spent a lot of time talking about the importance of assessment. So often in education we forget the importance of assessment of our students and how you can make assessment unique and more then just a “test”. While sometimes it is necessary to have a paper and pencil test there are many different tools that can be used to assess our student and ways to give students more feedback then just a grade. I have learned about how assessment is embedded into our curriculum. It is constantly a tool in my bag as the teacher. Assessment should be used diagnostically to check if the curriculum we have in place is successful. It is formative in checking for learning in the day to day life. It is also summative at the end of the unit. When assessing through out the curriculum it is important to use different tools. These tools can be rubrics, check list, rating scales, portfolio, performance and observation, etc. These tools are helpful in getting a wide range of information from the students instead of just observing what the students are doing. There is also the idea of norm-reference assessment and criterion-reference assessment these are important in are we assessing according to the criteria we have provided students or are we collecting data from the past ten years of our music program and what is going well and what is not going well. A teacher must also remember there are different people who can assess the student as well. The teacher can allow for students to self-evaluate themselves which can be a powerful tool for students to really reflect on what they are doing. As well as peer-evaluate which can be a way for students to really learn from each other and understand how to communicate with each other.
In my classroom I would like to use all of these through out my teaching. I would like to use the idea of rubrics in assessment because I feel that this is a good way to give my students feedback that they can use throughout their time in my class. I also like the idea of the students doing self-evaluation. I think it is important that students are able to reflect on how they are doing and what is necessary in order to keep growing as a musician. I would do this through portfolios, which is a good way for the teacher and student to both be part of assessment, as well as a way to share this with parents, administration, and anyone else who may need to see growth of a student. I would also like to use journals in music classroom. These are ways for students to right about what is going on in their head during class and be able to self-evaluate where they are in different processes and also a way for me as the teacher to understand where they may be lacking and where they are excelling. Assessment is a a tool embedded in our curriculum that really gives the teacher the ability to empower students to be the best they can be.
