The candidate seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, support staff, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession.
The candidate should complete a reflective essay detailing how they participated in the school in terms of leadership, collaboration, other school professionals, support staff, and community members. Artifacts detailing these relationships and activities should be included.
In my time at K-State I felt the need to be involved in more leadership roles, in the community, student development, and just gaining professional background. In my time here, I spent time getting connected to undergraduate research through a program called “Developing Scholars Program” (DSP). Through DSP, I was able to research for my four years of undergraduate schooling on the “Importance of Spanish Music Education in Vocal Music Education”. I felt this was necessary because this was shining light on racism in the classroom as well a prejudice, discriminatory, and sterotypes. Through this process I was able to share my own personal story in the area as well as many of my classmates and the different situations they have been. I also was able to bring this knowledge to different members of the community and to allow them to start thinking about the importance of eliminating this in our classrooms and the impact that teachers have in our community and students. Teachers can change the world but only if they are willing to go the extra mile and learn about their students and know what they need and who they are.
Also in my time at K-State I taught private piano lessons to six students and was able to learn how to teach private lessons in a studio and also how to work with younger students. This was a good experience to get to know other members that are in the community and bringing the necessity of music in our culture. I also got a chance to be a worship leader at Bluemont church and was not paid but was a volunteer and I taught how to read music, chord progressions, expression, character, and different subjects to help develop their musician skills. This helped me learn how to be professional even outside of a “school” environment and to get to know other members of the community.
