Standard 4: The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in listening to, analyzing, describing, and performing music.
In a music classroom the teacher must be able to know and understand music. Beyond this simple point, the teacher must be able aware of not only music that is around them but music of different genres, cultures, and periods. With this knowledge, a teacher is able to pick different genres of music that varies to give the students the ability to experience a full realm of music. In my classroom, I hope to help my students experience a diversity genres cultures and periods of music.
As the teacher I feel I have been well prepared to do this in my classroom due to my experience of being in different ensembles and in my voice lessons. In these different ensembles and lessons I was exposed to in different music genres and periods. I was able to really develop a round taste in music after learning this music. As well in my advance conducting class, we spent time talking about repertoire and how to create programs that are well rounded and are not just “classically” heavy. In this class we got to explore different programs that other teachers and conducting have made and see the technique they used while making these different programs. After that we were given the opportunity to explore how we would do this ourselves. In my introduction to conducting class we were given the opportunity to make a program for the instrumental side and explore the process. Also in my undergraduate research I was able to explore the importance of using music from different cultures. This is necessary to create a classroom. That is multicultural and feels the need to respect everyone in the classroom and the different cultures they come from.
This is important for my students because they need different genres and types of music in order to get a round and full music education. Students need music that is in their zone of proximity development and I will be able to determine that by listening and analyzing the different music we study in class. I also will be able to bring different music from time period that exposes them to history of music but also choosing music that is of their current time period and that is interesting to them. Without these skills there would be the possibility of me choosing music that is not correct for their development and that is only of my favorite kind of music and even music that I have only done before in my studies.
Students need a teacher that is able to meet their developmental needs in the classroom. With my education in listening, describing, analyzing and performing music, I have the ability to choose music that will meet my students needs in the classroom

This Artifacts are of six songs that I used in a Curriculum unit I used for Elemantry. For Elemantry Music pedagogy it is good to analyze your music so that you know how you can use this song in a lesson. Many songs are used for multiple concepts and lessons. It is also very important to know the different cultural and historical context of these songs so that as a teacher I am able to introduce my students to the different cultures and historical periods for them.

This is a video of me performing a song. The song is “Fair, Robin I Love” by Mechem. I prepared this song in order to perform it at the end of my senior year. Through this process I had to analyze the music, learn the music, as well as write program notes about this music. This was an oppurtunity that I was able to really get to know the music and really explore what is needed to perform this music well.
