Standard 1: The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in pedagogy (planning, delivering instruction, and assessment)
for vocal, instrumental, and general music.
This standard is important to my students and myself because without the knowledge of pedagogy and musical skills, my students will never receive the education they deserve. Because of my lack of knowledge I would be forced to spend hours before class and even in class continuously trying to make up for my lack of knowledge of Pedagogy and skill. Yet, with the knowledge of pedagogy and musical skills I could create a classroom that is geared toward creativity, improvising, exploring, and understanding music to a whole new level for all developmental stages. My students will need a teacher who is confident in their ability to sing alone, model repertoire, experience in large and small groups, access to different musical literature, the knowledge to hep students in all developmental stages to not leave anyone behind . and the knowledge to use different musical instruments and musical technologies. With this pedagogical knowledge and musical skills, the students will be able to secure the education and skills they need to be a musician.
I exhibit the skills and knowledge mentioned in the standard because first I have taken four years of vocal lessons which have prepared me to understand the vocal technique needed I order to understand how to voice works and how to take care of the voice. As well as learning to help a student solve different vocal difficulties by understand what could be causing that difficulty. Second, I have been a part of a majority of choirs at Kansas State University. I have been apart of women’s choir, collegiate choir, and concert choir. Women's choir provided me with the experience needed to understand how a choir of women would work specifically the care that must be taken in balancing the female voice and understanding how to navigate through the culture that is created in a women choir. Also I gained knowledge of different pieces of music that were great to bring out the unique qualities of a women's choir. In collegiate choir which is our lower audition choir at Kansas State University, I learned of how to teach a younger singer with potential of being great. How to install a community in your choir and create an atmosphere of creativity. Next, I was in concert choir at Kansas State University and this was the highest choir you could be in. In this choir I learned how to use all your musical skills to learn music. I learned the importance of solfege and understanding of rhythm and how necessary it is to have a community feel in your choir in order for the students to be able to function and feed off each other's knowledge and skills. I took four years of piano lessons at Kansas State University that provided me with the knowledge of how to play piano parts and accompany choirs and students. I also did undergraduate research at Kansas State University on “The Importance of Spanish Music in Music Education” and this project introduced me to not only the importance of Spanish Music in our music curriculum but also on the need for multicultural classrooms and being able to teach our students how to appreciate the different cultures that are expressed in the classroom and to enjoy the music from these cultures. I have taken classes on Elementary and Secondary Pedagogy in the classroom and how to teach the students according to their development needs at their age group. In these classes we learned how to mix classical training into allowing the students to be creative and improvise their own music.
My students will benefit from the skills and Pedagogy that I have learned while at Kansas State University because I have been taught how to put the students first. In their music education, me as the teacher must always use my skills and pedagogical to benefit the student. For example, in the class teaching students to use solfege to understand the function and relationship of the notes in the music they are singing is key. For younger students helping them understand how notes sound in their relationships in scale form. Students will also be able to create and improvise music on their own. I want my classroom to be a place where students are able to feel safe and learn what is necessary for them to be confident and maturing musicians.
With the education I received at Kansas State University on musical skills and pedagogy for the music classroom, I feel my students will have all that is necessary for them to gain musical knowledge and skills in my class.

In this Artifact it is a lesson plan that was created for an elemantry class room. This lesson is for second graders and allowing them to experiment on melodic improvise. This lesson uses the pedagogy learned in my Music 511 class at K-State where we are taught pedagogy for elemantry school. In this lesson I allow for the students to explore this topic for themselves and be creative. This also allows them the chance to improvise and feel safe in the in classroom. This lesson plan also uses music from a folk song and uses Orff instruments. This will allow the students to explore history and be apart of this unique song.

In this Artifact I created a jazz improvisation lesson plan. In this lesson plan I created it for instruments which is not my primary education is in. Through this, I can display that I can also create lesson plans for instruments as well as voice. In this Artifact the students are learning how to improvise harmony over a given melody. In this they are able to discover for themselves how to improvise a harmony while using solfege, instruments, and their voice. This is designed for a middle school age group of students. This also shows my ability to lesson plan for the secondary age group.
