As a student at K-State I have been exposed to the importance of community in your classroom. A classroom without a community and focus on individuals and collaborative learning can quickly become heavy and stifling to the growth in students. Students can easily feel a classroom is just a place for them to be talked at instead of a classroom where they are actively apart of their learning experience. I want to allow my students to be creating in my classroom and using critical thinking. I feel sometimes the best way for students to fully be able to understand concepts is for them to teach. I believe it is important to have student teaching weather it is in groups or in front of the whole class so they can really be actively involved in their learning as well as feeling the accountability of their learning. Allowing students to create goals for themselves and allowing them pursue those goals allows them also to have accountability.
In my classroom, I feel it is important for the students to be actively assessing themselves and allowing their music making not to be just the conductors job but also their job. I want them to be able to figure out what they are struggling with and be able to fix this problem and create solutions. I also want the students to be able to come up with musical ideas of what the song should have. Allowing them to be able to express dynamics on how the feeling and expression of the piece should be. In the elementary school allowing students to take ownership of movement is a way to engage them in the learning. I also would want students to lead sectionals and even allowing them the chance to come to the front of the class and teaching a concept to their peers. Also I believe in allowing students to create compositions in the classroom with technology using Garage Band or different software to allow them to be expressing themselves in their own way to the community. I also want to my students to feel safe in the classroom and be able to find a community in the classroom and I want to find this by discussing respect in the classroom.
