Education creates a place for students to learn basic knowledge such as reading, writing, math, and science. But not only do students gain knowledge the gain life skills. Students are able to learn about other cultures, social norms, and about who they are in this world.I try to imagine my life without education, and it is impossible. It is impossible to fully grasp a life without exploring new topics, discovering facts that were foreign to me before, and getting to experiment at new concepts I had not known before. The world needs education to help make earth a better place. I think education is more than just guiding students to pass a test but helping students find their purpose in the world. It helps students understand how they are uniquely needed in this world and what gifts and talents they can put into this world to make it a better place. I think back to my time of education and I can see how education has helped me learn about myself and about what I can give back to the world along with knowledge of reading, writing, math, and science. Education preserves culture and teaches us how to operate in society.
While education is important I think music education is also extremely important in the classroom. Music is so unique compared to anything on earth. In my opinion, music is uniquely defined and created by the individual. In my mind, music to the individual is like a snowflake, it is different to each person. Because of this individuality in music, music is a way for people to reflect, learn, and enjoy. Music is a way for student to safely explore themselves, the world, and others around them. They are able to explore cultures they may never had a chance to visit or learn about. They are able to learn about community and how important it is that each individual person is apart of our community because without them we are missing a unique part. Music is also a way from them to learn about themselves in a deep way without doing something dangerous. According to the National Association for Music Education, “Performing a musical piece can bring fear and anxiety. Doing so teaches kids how to take risks and deal with fear, which will help them become successful and reach their potential.” They can take risks in the music classroom and be bold. Students are able to explore themselves and realize what they can offer the the communities and those around them.
Music can be created not only with the voice or instrument but is found in different forms which means everyone has the chance to experience music. For example, dancing creates music from the noise of their shoes hitting the ground. Music can be what the individual wants it to be. Since music is so individual, I believe music is for everyone. Everyone has the ability to create music. I think everyone should be given the opportunity to learn and experience music. I feel even if an individual does not enjoy music there is still an opportunity to learn out of music. It is like math, many students do not enjoy math but they learn something from math and use it in their everyday. And since everyone deserves to experience and learn music I believe that everyone should have the ability to teach music. I think for me the way we know that someone really has mastered a skill is if they can teach someone else of this skill. As a music educator, I know I can get caught up in the idea that I must be the teacher in the classroom. Yes, all students deserve the ability to learn of music and have an education but I forget they also deserve to teach. When I allow students in my class to teach I am allowing them to learn how to teach in the real world. They are learning skills of communication, how to give critical criticism in a professional way, how to explain their ideas, and how to express themselves in front of a crowd. These skills will later make a difference in their jobs, family lives, and in their community involvement. I want students in my class to be able teach each other about music and in this they are showing their unique self, unique idea of music, and they are learning about their purpose in the world. I believe that through teaching students will be able to master their skills and be able to learn from each other. Also through the process they will learn how to communicate with each other and how to give feedback.
Music education is more than just learning to read notes. It is learning the importance of music in your life. Students deserve the chance to understand the value music can hold in their life by exploring different genres of music. In my opinion it is necessary to provide students with a variety of music ranging from different genres to music from different cultures. In this process we are creating a community that is respectful of each other’s cultural differences and the beauty these different cultures can bring to the classroom. I want my students to feel like they can bring their cultural identity in my classroom and I will not take that away from them. The classroom is a place where I can help students understand the importance of respecting other cultures and learning from them. In this my hope is students will leave my class with the understanding to always respect cultures and see the beauty in learning from each other. Music is the start to that, music is found in most cultures and is a way to have a first toe dip into what makes a culture and what is so unique about these cultures.
Also in my classroom I want to create the environment that it is okay to make mistakes. That mistakes do not define a student but what they do after the mistake shows their true qualities. Learning can not happen without mistakes and I want my students to make mistakes and learn from these mistakes. I want to be there for my students by being their teacher and understanding students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and sometimes have different needs. Yet, keeping in mind that I am the teacher of these students and not a friend. I do believe their needs to be professional line between I and the students so that there is an established credibility.
Music is important in all education. It is a way to discover about ourselves, our community, and cultures. The music classroom can be a safe place where we learn how to not be afraid of mistakes. The music classroom can be a place where these students learn how to be teachers not of a certain subject but of life. I teach so students are not just able to pass a test but are able to go into life as an individual who is educated in academia but also in the ability to communicate, see the value of community, and understands their value and value of others. Teachers can change the world when we realize the ability and provide those opportunity for our students.
