Standard 3: The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in reading and writing music.
This standard is important for me and my students because this is the fundamentals of music. Without these skill I would not be able to guide my students to understanding music, notating music, or participate in the music journey. These skills are what allow us, as musicians, to enjoy music the way we do.
I feel that I have been well prepared to meet this standard. At Kansas State University we have to take three Aural skills class that prepare us to sight read music, hear different aspects the music, and notate different aspects by ear of the music. We are taught in three different classes that build upon each other. Not only are we learning the skills slowly but also learning how to one day teach our children the basics of aural skills. With these aural skills, we had to pass proficiencies after our third class of Aural Skills. This test was the capstone of the program and if we were not able to pass the test we would be held back until we did. There were classes that there pre-requirements were the aural skills test. With this, I am confident in my ability to sight read music. I have also taken music theory classes at K-State and these classes helped me understand the basics of how to write music. I understand the theory fundamentals that must be in place to successfully write music from counterpoint, classical style, to contemporary music of today. I have also taken Instrumentation and Arranging which allowed me the skills to be able to arrange music and understand the process of creating scores for individual parts as well as orchestral scores and understanding how to format those different scores and how to read them. I have also taken two conducting classes at Kansas State University where I learned how to read scores and listen to the instruments around me. I have also had classes on how to use Garage Band for writing music on and using the instruments on the software.
This will all benefit my students because I will be able to help them really explore the music making realms by being stable in my fundamentals. I will be better prepared for lessons because I will be able to prep at home the scores, understanding of what the music should sound like, conducting the different music, and being able to help them understand the fundamentals. I believe that the fundamentals are important, my students will be trained in aural skills and theory. My students will be able to hear the different chords in the music, be able to notate music from what they hear. I also would like to give my students the chance to write their own music. I would like to do this through the process of using Garage Band and slowly allowing them to understand how to use this software to notate music and then grading them on a rubric on how well they were able to use Garage Band to write for example an eight measure song using Garage Band instruments and 4/4 time.
I believe that reading and writing music are the fundamentals of music. Without these skills students would not be able to fully grasp how music is created and understand how to do these process on their own. As their teacher, I would want to help guide these students to be the best musician they can be through use of these musical fundamentals.

This is an assignment from MUSIC 525 that is used to show that I was able to take different patterns and was able to transpose this into differnt instruments. We were creating for a violin and as well as understanding the different clefs that are necessary for these instruments. We spent many days practicing this skill for woodwinds, strings, brass, percussion, and voice. Also spent time understanding the ranges of these instruments as well and the different textures of the voices in the different ranges.

This is a score of one of the songs I sang while in concert choir at K-State. This music is showing the ability to solfege the music and the ability that is necessary to do this. As well as being able to analyze the music and being able to mark up the score so that it can directly show where different actions need to be taken as well as where breaths should be used. There are also more direct information on dynamics such as crescendo and decresendo.
