Standard 5: The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in selecting, analyzing, interpreting, presenting, and evaluating music and music performance within the context of music education.
This standard is important because these skills are necessary to fully understand how to create performances and allow students to get the full experience of the performance. Through these skills me as a teacher can create a classroom that has a variety of teaching materials and performances to help students get the full effect of the classroom.
In my theory classes, we underwent understanding what made a certain piece special and unique. I spent time focusing on small aspects such as chords and how a perfect cadence can really create a difference in a piece. I also spent time looking at the big picture of the piece and understanding what creates the piece such as looking at modulation and rhythm changes of the piece. In concert choir, our choir conductor would constantly ask us to evaluate the piece and explain why this piece was good for us to be studying. He would ask us to access what chord would we end on and what would make that chord unique. We also spent time understanding why we should as vocalist use etudes to help prepare the voice to sing different music. I spent time in instrumentation and arranging focused on studying music and finding errors and if this certain piece was the best put together piece that could be used to study. In music history we spent time looking at different pieces and analyzing why certain pieces were made for different time periods and the importance of studying this music time period and the advantages one would get for understanding this historical time period.
All of this will benefit my students because I will be able to understand the music they are studying. I will be able to analyze beforehand tricky chords that may appear in their music and help them grow to the point where they will be able to tackle the chords in their music. Another aspect is to give purpose to the music they are studying. I know it is often hard to sing a piece unless there is a purpose behind it and understanding of why this piece of music is important. The students will be able to perform these different pieces with accuracy. Through this process students will be able to self-evaluate them and how they did during their performance with the understanding they have gained in class.
In conclusion, because of my ability to analyze music and interpret what is best for my class students will be able to have more of a grasp of the objective of the class. These students will be able to fully understand their music and the purpose of studying this music. This will help students perform with more accuracy and help students evaluate themselves.

This past year I gave a senior recital in order to present what I have learned in the past four years at Kansas State University in voice lessons. For this I had the chance to research each song and understand the history of the piece as well as the author and more about them. I think as teachers it is important to know about the song and the history behind the piece and also about the artist. This is a way to inspire and influence the studentes to want to explore this piece more. If students are interested in the music then they will want to be held accountable in the music. This also gives you a new appreciation of the music that was not there before.

For one of the classes that I took at K-State I was able to go to different percussion recitals and to really evulate a performance of the performers. This was so helpful for me to have more understanding of the percussion world and how they perform and even just listening to an hour of music. While listening to this music it seemed to help me connect to the art of playing with percussion and really being able to understand the percussion world. I think it is important to have students listen to other performances for them to really be able to understand what is necesssary to be an excellent performer.
